Getting Your Dog Ready for the Fall Hunting Season
September 1st is the opening of the dove hunting season. Right after that, October begins the opening of the pheasant hunting season in the popular hunting states around Colorado. Now is the time to prepare for a fun and successful hunting season. Step one is to schedule your hunting dog for a thorough examination by your veterinarian to be sure he or she is healthy enough for hunting this season. Once your hunting dog is cleared to hunt, it is very important that you get your dog in good hunting shape well before the start of hunting season. Proper weight and conditioning will make your dog’s hunting performance superior and his recovery from a long day of hunting much quicker. To ensure your hunting dog's performance, make sure now that they are ready for hunting season.
Elizabeth Animal Hospital will be hosting two demonstration classes for owners and their hunting dogs. They will be held on Tuesday nights, August 11 and August 18 from 7pm to 9pm. Tim Harris of Rugged Retriever Training will talk about some conditioning drills he uses and recommends. He will answer questions about training tune-ups.
It is also important for you to know how to treat your dog for minor hunting injuries and to carry proper first aid to perform those treatments. Knowing how to evaluate injuries and how to respond to major injuries can save your dog’s life. At the classes, Dr. Leon Anderson and Dr. Chris Morris will discuss evaluating hunting injuries and instruct you in treating them in the field until you can take your dog to a veterinarian for medical attention. They will also advise you on how to stabilize your dog if he sustains more than a minor injury so that you can immediately get him to a veterinarian.
There will be plenty of time for a question and answer session. Hands-on demonstrations will be performed for treating the most common field injuries:
Eye irritations and injuries.
Superficial lacerations.
Puncture wounds.
We will make recommendations for a first-aid kit to carry with you on hunting and training trips. For your convenience, these kits will also be available for purchase during the classes. Each class is limited to 6 participants. The cost of the class is $35 and covers the instruction and the first aid supplies used during the class. Registration is required. Please call 303-646-2891 to register and get additional information for the registrants. If both classes fill and there is a demand for additional classes, they will be scheduled later in the month of August.

Here are some important tips for your hunting trips with your dog:
1. Carry a copy of your dog’s current Rabies certificate.
2. Be sure your dog is current on recommended annual vaccinations, including Lepto-4.
3. Carry ingredients for skunk-off recipe. There's nothing quite like driving home with a dog that's been skunked.
4. Be sure your dog is microchipped and it is registered.
5. Have your dog wear a collar with an identification plate.
6. Check expiration dates on items in your first-aid kit.
7. Carry a brush/comb for sand burrs.
8. Carry flea/tick spray
